I created this wood engraving on mulberry paper as a New Year’s Day gift for 1994. The original edition of 16 are all gone; these are “Artist’s Proofs”— the ones I used as a reference while I was working on the rest.

A wood engraving’s typically small size is part of its charm. In this case the image area measures 2 x 3”, but the prints have been framed in two different sizes. The smaller frame (9 1/8 x 7 1/8”) is painted a tone of oil-rubbed bronze, with the print mounted floating in a red silk mat. The larger frame (11 1/4 x 9 1/4”) has a distressed dark barnwood finish, with the print floating in a golden brown mat.

Fine art prints are NOT reproductions—every print is a unique, individual work of art. Printmaking is a fascinating, craftsmanlike process. I make a block or plate, apply various inks to it, and then transfer that ink onto the paper. The final result is like a painting with lots of relatives!
